Small Business Spotlight: Whitney Rahim

We are so excited to share the next installment of our Small Business Spotlight, Whitney Rahim! " Whitney Rahim is a Texas-based abstract artist who is drawn to the movement, colors, and depth found in impressionist paintings. She uses a variety of mediums including oil, watercolor, acrylics, and pastels. Her eye is acutely aware of the different hues and depth in color and her brain sees the way that colors work together to tell a story and convey emotion."

Q: When did you develop a love for painting?
As long as I can remember, I have memories of painting and being creative. I was always drawing as a kid. I really came into my love for painting in High School though and as a result went on to study Art History at Baylor. After college I skipped a few years of painting (more like a decade), for raising kids and a typical 9-5 job. But during the beginning of the pandemic, I rediscovered my love for creating art. One day my kids and I painted rocks to leave around the neighborhood as an activity for virtual school. I never stopped painting after that and it snowballed to present day. Due to social media I found that selling work on my own is actually possible. I am so glad to get to realize this dream as a reality.

Q: What materials do you use in your work? Paints, canvas, paper, etc?
I typically work on canvas with acrylic and watercolor paints. I love big canvases and the freedom that working large brings. I also frequently mix high brow acrylics with craft grade paints. The colors are endless! I think I have at minimum 20 different greens. More recently though I am exploring paper pieces which is a fun change. Paper is less forgiving and is a work in thinking ahead. I love both paper and canvas for their own natures.

Q: From where do you draw your inspiration?
I am always looking around for different color combinations and the way that nature creates beautiful things on its own. I can only hope to capture the calm that a summer mountain hike gives, or a steady river in the spring. I also find inspiration in my children and their lack of inhibitors when creating art. My kids make beautiful things that I bring into my studio as inspiration.

Q: Playing with colors and textures excites us when designing jewelry. What excites you when painting?
It really excites me when I find a fun color combination that I hadn’t used before. I’m really into peach colors right now and how they play off of aqua colors. I also get excited when a drip goes a good direction in a painting. Something I didn’t control that works out beautifully.

Q: Any business leaders or artists that inspire or influence you and your brand?
I am so inspired by anyone who is making their dreams a reality. Even if they are in the depths of the struggle. There are lessons to be learned by the hard times too. But I love to see successes when they come! I love to connect with so many artists through Instagram and have so many people who I am inspired by.

Q: What can we look forward to seeing from your brand in the near future?
I have a Christmas collection coming out in November. I am already starting my ornaments to prepare! I also have some launches of floral landscapes coming to my site so keep an eye out! Things are always moving and shaking around here so keep an eye out for more!
